LIFESTAGES / Babies And Children / Bottle Feeding

Bottle feeding
The British Dental Association has produced helpful Guidelines about this issue:

•Wherever possible only put water or milk in your baby's bottle

•Don't be tempted to put fruit juices in a bottle. The acid can attack your baby's teeth.

•Even very weak fruit squash can damage your baby's teeth. Stick with water or milk to keep the risk of decay to a minimum

Of course, it is common practice to bottle feed babies, but not many people are aware of the risks of tooth decay associated with bottles or specifically what you put in them! It is easy to fall into the trap of putting juice, even diluted fresh juice in your child’s bottle which can then cause tooth decay and acid damage. If you really can’t get your baby to drink milk or water, try to limit the frequency you give your child sweetened juice.
